A few details about our history

The introduction of peach palm cultivation in the micro region of Southern Bahia and at Fazendas Reunidas Vale do Juliana.

The introduction of peach palm (‘pupunha’ in Portuguese) in Bahia occurred in 1960, in the municipality of Ituberá, in the lower tip of Southern Bahia, by the Agronomy Engineer Antônio Lemos Maia. From the beginning of the 1990’s, with increased knowledge about the peach palm as a heart of palm producing source, the search for information and seeds intensified, yet not on a commercial scale. The interest in peach-palm cultivation has continued to grow since that time, which has motivated producers to look for alternative cultivation strategies to diversify their rural properties, while emphasizing products that would be profitable in the expanding market.

The first planting at the commercial scale at the Fazendas Reunidas Vale do Juliana was initiated in 1993. Currently, the peach palm business occupies an area of 335 hectares, from which 150 hectares are cultivated in rows of 2m x 1m, with a density of 5,000 trees per hectare. The remaining 185 hectares are cultivated in rows with 1.85 m x 0.75m, with 7,200 trees per hectare density. It is divided into four small companies and 53 pieces of land measuring 4.5 to 7.5 hectares each, all destined according to the Agriculture Partnership Business Model. In this model, a group of land areas form a small business and all the small businesses form the Peach Palm Business at the Fazendas Reunidas Vale do Juliana.
